In my opinion, doing nothing might be the best suggestion. I know of a Sugar Maple tree whose trunk was split vertically for nearly two feet when a larger tree fell on it. It wasn't just split; the pressure of the fall caused the split to widen. The tree healed itself with no problems and we can look right through the middle of the tree.
