I have a feeling that you are right and they are blank.  The squirrels start eating the shucks and then quit.  They probably decide that it is a waste of effort.  Do I need a pollinator in order to have good pecans?
I believe my variety is either Major or Peruque.  What would be a good pollinator?

Judson,
Unless someone nearby has a pecan with compatible pollen-shed/nutlet-receptivity patterns, then, yes, you need a pollenator variety.
Major and Peruque are both protandrous(early pollen-shed, mid to late-season nutlet flower receptivity) so regardless of which variety you have(you should be able to differentiate between the two based on nut shape), you need a protogynous variety.
Kanza or Chetopa would be my recommendations for a late pollen source, if you've got space for only one.

Lucky
