I did some more searching and found the apple variety Linda listed in one
of my older books. It doesn't indicate that it is a tip bearer. It
says it was introduced in 1935 from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It says that
it is a vigorous variety that comes into bearing at an early age. It may
have been that the growth is too week and spindly to carry a heavy load of fruit
if it had too many on it. I always head long growing shoots back part way
to stiffen them up.
I'll be interested to see what others such as Ed Fackler has to say about
it.
