A press only works with certain types of grapes. Try pressing Concord and types like it, with slipskins and slippery, mucilaginous pulp. If you use a bag, the pulp quickly gums the bag. Use a type with open slats and the grapes squirt out the openings. Regular wine grapes are much juicier and less prone to gumming a bag, and they compress more readily.
If you juice Concord types, they usually have to be broken up very well. A blender on low speeds to prevent breaking seeds is a good idea.
This is all written down, plus a lot more, in a book now in production.
