There are many pesticides that are relatively safe for bees and some only mildly toxic to bees, depending on the pest you want to spray for. Imidan is not safe for bees and we spray it only at night. We try to use it only once a season as we have found other alternatives since it is an OP and will be phased out within the next few years. The 2007 Fruit Management Guide from Michigan State University has a chart on page 65 that gives you the effectiveness of insecticides and miticides in controlling pests of apples and at the bottom of the chart is a toxicity table for bees, mite predators and insect predators. You can download the entire guide free at http://web1.msue.msu.edu/epubs/pestpubs/E154/index.htm. It also includes fungicides as well as complete lists of the various chemicals available and their toxicity. It is the best guide I have ever found and we use it constantly here at Royal Oak Farm. I hope it helps. Dennis Norton
