I think one of the most important points is that the domestic cat is a non-native predator.  There was not a similar predator before the introduction of the domestic cat.  In other words, they aren't filling a niche vacated by an extirminated natural predator.
Predation by the cat has a great impact on already diminished populations.
The other important facts are that the cat is a very effective predator and that the cat will hunt even though not hungry.   Free-roaming cats and feral cats are estimated to be responsible for hundreds of millions of wild bird deaths (rate depends on the area of the country).

I've seen a batch of such studies. Do you know if they have anything
addressing the specific issue I raised (below)? Can you link it, if so?
I'm on a slow phone line and it can take me a very long time to hunt
through most web sites.
