Dear Nafex members,

North Olympic Fruit Club is hosting its 2006 Fall Fruit Show on Saturday, October 21st at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend, WA, from 10 am to 4 pm.  Besides tables filled with cultivars of locally grown apples, pears, nuts, grapes and hardy kiwis, visitors enjoy the tasting tables.

Dr. Robert Norton, WSU Professor Emeritus of Horticulture, will be on hand to help identify unknown apples. Bring 5 representative apples from your tree. Don’t wash or polish them.  Place the apples in a paper bag and keep the bag in the refrigerator until the show. Bring the apples and perhaps a few leaves from the tree to Dr. Norton’s booth.

Here’s the seminar schedule:

10:15 AM - “Fruit Tree Care and Proper Pruning” with Paul Gautschi.  Paul is a Master Arborist and lives in Gardiner.  You’ll find him at work on his 5-acre teaching orchard where he grows all manner of beautiful fruit.  His mulching concepts are cutting edge and conserve valuable resources.

11:30 AM - “Soil Microbes and Compost Tea” with Leon Hussey, owner of ‘Keep It Simple’ compost tea brewers in Seattle.  Leon is Vice President of the Compost Tea Association, Vice President of the Redmond Organization for Shared Environments and on the Regional Review Committee for compost guidelines.  Leon won the King County Green Globe Award.

1 PM   - “How to Espalier Fruit Trees” with Kristan Johnson.  Kristan is a well-known landscaper living in Port Ludlow.  He’s president of Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation. The Foundation promotes fruit research funding, educational programs and publications leading to improved cultivars for Western Washington

2:30   PM    - “Growing Organic Greenhouse Fruit” with Tom Wood, owner of Raspberry Rich Farms in Centralia.  Tom grows organic fruits in pots all year long in his greenhouses. His berries are the finest and best tasting.  Tom delivers fruit year ‘round, having carved a niche in Olympia’s markets.  He spent the last 20 years breeding plants. He’ll describe how  he achieves two crops of fruit per year.

There’ll be grafting demonstrations, one-of-a-kind fruit trees available plus a number of selected hybrid grape plants, fresh-pressed cider and apples, freshly baked pies and cakes, local honey, orchard mason bee blocks, cider, wine and root beer making supplies and much, much more.

Admission is $3 per person or $5 per family.  There’s plenty of free parking.  The Fairgrounds is wheelchair accessible. .

North Olympic Fruit Club is a chapter of Western Cascade Fruit Society.
