The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva and International Plant Management, Inc. have released two new processing cherry varieties. For long-time cherry growers, these varieties might have familiar names. Andersen, a stem-on cocktail cherry, is named after Dr. Robert Andersen, a cherry breeder in Geneva who retired last year. Andersen is a large, acidic cherry with a bright-pink blush and resistance to bacterial canker. It is very well-suited for stem-on shaker harvest. Meanwhile, Nugent is a yellow cherry with a spreading tree that bears very heavily. Its namesake is Jim Nugent, coordinator of Michigan State University’s Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station. The cherry is an excellent pollinator with good crack resistance. For more information on either of these cherries, call 800-424-2765.
