Based on my experience, success with amelanchiers may be very site specific. I have tried a number of species and cultivars over the years and rarely get any fruit to ripen; they succumb to a range of insects and diseases. Five miles away, however, there is a planting that always ripens a perfect crop. I've even propagated plants from that planting and planted them on my property. No crop. My site is low ground with excellent soil drainage but poor air drainage which makes the air a bit cooler and moister than the site where the plants thrive. At neither site do plants receive any sprays for pest control.
