Jim, the ripening time of the pollinator has no effect on the ripening
time of the ovary (fruit) it fertilizes. The F1 hybrid progeny would
likely be a different matter in terms of ripening time, and would likely
display a range. -- Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn.

One of my peach varieties usually doesn't ripen until about the time
of my average first frost. Plums, another Prunus, ripen earlier and I
plan to hand pollenate some peach blossoms with plum pollen to see if
they ripen earlier. If that works, I'd either plant a peach and a plum
in the same hole or do extensive grafting of one onto the other.
Has anyone else ever done such silly(?) experiments? If so, what
and for what results?
