Sounds like what is known as a "spade bit", to me. Commonly sold under the
Irwin and other labels. Any bit for making holes would be a "boring bit".

Michael,

I'm another whose not following how you're using this, but I think
I know what tool you're talking about.

It's a flat (at the blade end) drill bit generally for drilling into wood
(as opposed to the default spiral bits you more usually see).
Am I correct?

How you're using it, I'm not sure I follow.
