I know some folks use a C-clamp, and I suppose
a large enough one would crack anything. I’ve used that and even a
metal vise to crack difficult nuts. The nuts are places with the ends
against the metal parts, then a turn of the handle. The C clamp can be
held easily over a bowl, and the shape of the screw-end holds the nut
lengthwise more easily than a vise does; but the vise was satisfying
overkill. I know people market some formidable
nutcrackers, and I wait to possibly hear some reviews. Should you go
low-tech, the C-clamp is cheap and multifunctional. Who knows, you could
sneak a nut into the hardware store and find the right size for the job. You
might run the risk of someone seeing the shells on the floor, pointing and
