I've found that my taste preferences & sensativities change w/ time of day, fatigue &/or dehydration level, weather, and maybe astrological influences [joke]. Sometimes only the tart fruits seem edible, other times only the sweetest apples will do. This gives me an excuse to share my fruit exploring w/ neighbors and other tolerant acquaintances, because if I can get comments back from several other tasters, the info is much more reliable than just my biased & fickle taste-buds.

I don't remember which compound we used to test supertasters back at
college, but we would put a drop on snips of paper. Subjects would hold the
paper against their tongues and describe the flavor. The substance I was
thinking of would register as flavorless, mildly pleasant, or mildly
unpleasant, all the way up to "Yecch!! Are you trying to poison me? What is
this, lye??"" I'm in the last group....
