The author of the story sure didn't do their research. Delicious is a LOUSY storing apple. The only reason the later strains store better is that they color so early they can be picked while they are still unripe and will then keep in controlled atmosphere storage a long time. A well ripened true Delicious, which is a delight to eat, MIGHT keep until Christmas if you're lucky, but more likely you'll have a mealy mess.
And they didn't breed new strains, they were all found as bud or tree sports by chance.
