- Subject: [NAFEX] apples, early and keeping

one excellent keeping apple not yet mentioned is
'GoldRush' - they will easily keep for a year, tho they need to be in
plastic to retard dehydration -
and someone mentioned picking all their early
variety in one fell swoop (Transparent?) - I don't agree with this as a general
rule - can't speak for every early apple, but Transparent in particular
always ripen unevenly and size is always an issue - at least 2 pickings,
and usually 3 - skim the first third off at the strategic moment (right
now, here in northcentral Indiana) and watch the remaining fruit gain 1/8"
in a day, and a 1/4" or more before returning to harvest 2/3rds of the remaining
fruit a week or so later - and clean the trees a few days later - weather
conditions play a major role in the schedule, of course -
