Forgive me if the names are incorrectly spelled
or slightly off as a lot of this is from my poorly
handwritten notes.

I know personally that a few of these will not
finish on the tree in Maine and must be picked
green to ripen in storage.

Zone 4 hardy apple rootstocks
-----------------------------
My favorites are Antonovka (standard),
MM111 (semi-dwarf), Vineland 2 (dwarf).

Antonovka will grow just about in any
soil.

MM111 likes plenty of water, but can
withstand mild droughts pretty well.

Vineland 2 loves water and supposedly
hates drought. If your orchard is
beside a river or mire (like mine is),
you're good to go. I like this one a
lot. Much better than M26. Unfortunately,
I can't find it in the US. If anyone
knows where I can get it in the US
without having to drive to the New
Brunswick Research Centre, please let
me know. Thanks.

These rootstocks don't have to be
grafted. Most of these will make pretty
good fruit. I'm not sure about the M27
or Vinelands, though.

---------------

Antonovka (excellent cider/cooking yellow apple)

M26 (small golden green cooking apple)

M27 (only hardy if the snow completely covers the
"rosebush"; otherwise dies back in winter
to snow level)

MM106 (large yellow/red cooking apple)

MM111 (small yellow/red cooking apple)

P18 (large golden yellow cider/cooking apple; tastes
like Antonovka)

Vineland 1, 2, 3, or 4 (all supposedly make small
red apples)
