The warnings were in regards to the burr knots. It was the only literature I'd seen lately about precise placement of MM111 graft, so I thought I should check with some growers! Thanks.

Graft union height can change the ultimate size of tree and the yield, depending on the rootstock. It may also change the winter hardiness. (I recently read somewhere that trees grafted higher onto antononvka (if I recall) were more productive.)
In the situation with 111, I doubt that there would be any drawbacks to grafting higher except that if rabbits do some damage you may have to regraft.
What had you read Tanis, what were these "dire warngings"?
