Hello Jerry,
It would be neat to try the method you mention in
tissue culture using meristems instead of whole buds. A grad student at
the university of MD tried to obtain graft induced chimeras in the early 90's by
using in vitro techniques. She was trying to produce a "hand in glove"
type apple chimera which would have the outer cell layer from a scab resistant
apple variety and the inner cell layers from a high quality apple susceptible to
scab. She was also trying to produce a thornfree blackberry hybrid in the
same way. There are thornfree Rubus which are natural hand in glove type
chimeras and need to be propagated by stem cuttings rather than root cuttings in
order to maintain thornlessness.

Subject: [NAFEX] Chimera
Hello,
I'm a little hesitant to way in
on this subject as there are writers more educated on this subject than I.
One way to create a chimera is called Mentoring. However I've read two
different definitions of mentoring. This definition would entail making two
preciously identical cut scions ready for bark grafting. One of species "a"
and the other of species "b" of which the chimera is to be made. Then
each prepared scion would be split lengthwise down the middle through the bud
with a very sharp thin instrument such as a razor blade. From these, two bark
grafts could be made, one a + b the other b + a. These are then brought
together so the bud halves are perfectly aligned and inserted as bark grafts.
If one is extremely lucky, and the bud halves don't die and they heal
together then grow you could get a chimera.
I hope I've written this
such that it is understandable. I've never tried it but have been tempted to
using American and kaki persimmon.
Jerry
