Bruce,

I'd "bit my e-tongue" about your original e-mail until now. I usually find
rants such as yours on listservs to be useless, off-topic,
counterproductive and unworthy of response. The responses to your
arrogant, condescending, conceited e-mail have restored my faith in the
good qualities of the great people in NAFEX. I found your e-mail highly
offensive.

I'm at a stage in my life with young kids and a tight budget, but, although
only as a "hobbyist," one of my one of my favorite outlets/great loves is
growing fruits and nuts. How dare you insult me with your e-mail?

Someday I hope to be a bigger contributor both financially and in writing.
Until then, I'll pay dues as required by the by-laws and contribute where I
can.

I also agree that a direct donation to NAFEX makes imminently more sense
than randomly giving gift subscriptions where Pamona will end up in the
trash unread and we'd have high member turnover as these people left the
organization.

You may be "trying to be responsible," but how about if you be responsible
for you and let the rest of us worry about ourselves?

Mark

SAM:

IN A PERFECT WOULD I WOULD CAREFULLY CONSIDER WHO I GAVE A MEMBERSHIP TO.
BUT, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, THE ISSUE IS INCREASING YOUR DONATION TO NAFEX.
ASKING IF YOU HAVE DONE SO IS NOT OFFENSIVE. PERHAPS BLUNT BUT NOT
OFFENSIVE. AFTER ALL WHEN YOU AND OTHERS ON THE LIST-SERV
JOINED, THE MEMBERSHIP CAME WITH SOME RESPONSIBILITIES.

Bruce, I believe it does matter whom we recruit for new members by
giving gift memberships because whether the new member will continue as
an active participant in NAFEX is a product of his/her place of
residence, enthusiasm, pomological interests, philosophy and financial
resources. I say this because I have given several gift memberships to
another organization to which I belong and to my knowledge none of the
recipients has maintained his/her membership past the period covered by
the gift membership. I now am a lot pickier about how I select those to
whom I give such memberships.

What we should be looking for is people who have an abiding interest in
growing fruit at home who will continue as involved members over time.
That is how an organization grows strong through its membership.--Sam
Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn.

Lisa:

My goodness. The truth is often considered an insult. So be it. I am not
her to motivate you or anyone. NAFEX could use a little money. It
doesn't matter if you send free memberships to France as long as NAFEX
has your money. Pick anyone and send their membership data and the grand
amount of $13.00 to Jackie.

Some of us are trying to be responsible and address the issue. Since you
know how to graft why not graft a few trees and donate them to others
for a donation to NAFEX. Perhaps you have other ideas?

NAFEX is going to use the money to pay their bills. Simple.

Bruce

This is uncalled for. Do you think that being
insulted like this is somehow going to motivate us?

I do not object to paying somewhat higher dues; I'd
love the fruits on cards like CFRG has; I am working
on my article. I will not buy a guest membership for
a stranger, that makes no sense to me - why not just
donate money directly? I don't need more apple trees
(since I learned to graft, I have too many); if
someone offers something I could use, I'll happily
bid. You also apparently think we should only ask
what the money will be used for after having donated:
you can't be serious about that.
