I have not heard of Sorbus-Crataegus hybrids before.  I checked the ARS-Grin database and found a number of intergeneric hybrids of Sorbus with other rose family edibles…

X Sorbocrataegus = Mountain Ash x Hawthorn

X Sorbaronia = Mountain Ash x Aronia

X Sorbomespilus = Mountain Ash x Medlar

X Sorbopyrus = Mountain Ash x Pear

At least one of these specimens is available for distribution from the national repository system.

 

What do you know of these hybrids (who produced them, where did they originate)?

Do any of them have culinary potential?

This may help explain something that happened to me one time.  I had a few cuttings of a Sorbus-Crataegus hybrid I stored in the refrigerator and forgot.  When spring came, I found them and they had produced a ring of callus.  I treated them with Dip -n- Gro liquid rooting hormone and planted them.  I only had a couple, but they rooted and grew.  The person I got them from said that they had never been able to root cuttings previously, so the method may be something to try on other things besides Prunus.

Hello all,

I have used the above basic method to propagate P. cerasifera with slight modification and it works very well. I take 12 inch cuttings pencil size about Nov. 1 (zone 5B), remove leaves, quick dip bottom 1/2 inch in Woods Rooting Liquid, air dry until the liquid is dry (a few minutes). Now I bundle (hand full size) these cuttings and place in 1 inch damp milled sphagnum in a vertical position at about 60 degrees for two weeks. During this time the basel end callouses. I then reopen the bundle insert a little more sphagnum along the length of the bundle to retain moisture, but not wet, wrap entirely in heavy plastic and store vertically positioned in the cooler at about 35 degrees. I also store apples in this walk in cooler and haven't detected any degradation of material. In early spring as soon as ground temp reaches about 60 degrees they are placed in the growing beds, 6 inches deep and 6 inches above ground level. At this time some of the cuttings will have already begun to root.     

Will this work with cherries, don't know, haven't tried it.
