The spacing of black currants depends on several things. If you are growing commercially, you want as many plants per acre as possible to increase the yield per acre. Therefore, plant them so they will form a "hedge" with almost no distance between plants when they are mature (5 to 6 years). You must also consider the cultivar, some are larger and more robust than others. This predisposes that you will use a mechanical harvester.

If you are a smaller grower and will pick by hand, you probably should plant the rows closer together but more space between plants in the row.

Ben Sarek is a smaller, more compact plant, growing approximately 3 to 3.5 feet in height and width. It can be planted at about 3.5 to 4 feet in the row.

Ben Lomand is a large plant that is more open and should be planted 4.5 to 5 feet in the row.

Most of the Russians and Titania are very large plants and should be at least 5 feet in the row.

The distance between rows depends on the machinery that will be used.

Ed Mashburn ... In central PA where the gooseberries are just leafing out and the currants are a bit behind them - all are two weeks or more late this year.
