It has been suggested to me to use first year growth for scion wood. One
of the reasons being that it is softer to cut. However, almost all scion
wood I
have encountered with first year growth is very thin. This makes it difficult
to get a good cut for whip and tongue, plus as others have pointed out, it may
decrease the success rate for the resulting graft because of it's smaller area
of contact. Aside from the soft wood issue,
are there any other disadvantages to using 2nd or 3rd year growth for scion
and
do the advantages of a bigger diameter scion outweigh them?
