I don't know how relevant this will be to the NW, but my father grew Hanska
plums in North Georgia (Zone 7). I don't remember exactly when it bloomed,
but it seemed like it wasn't much different from the 'Bruce' & 'Methley'. It
would usually set a few fruit if the trees were sprayed for curculios. The
taste, in my opinion, was like many Japanese plums as far as the skin went,
but delectably sweet with a hint of apricot richness the rest of the way to
the pit. His trees didn't live longer than about ten years, however. The
'Methley' is still kickin' at 25.

If no-one has experience with Hanska plum, a description of it should be in a
South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station bulletin describing the
cultivars developed by Dr. N. E. Hansen. I don't remember the exact title,
but I contributed a copy to the NAFEX library several years ago.

As far as a source of Hanska is concerned
(http://www.growit.com/Plants/Growers/2855.htm ), it is being propagated by
Jeff Tuley Farms, a wholesale nursery, in Murchison, TX (phone 800/950-7115,
Web site at http://www.jefftuleyfarms.com/ ).

You might also correspond with the SDSU Experiment Station to see whether
they have maintained this cultivar in their collection. -- Sam Brungardt, St.

Hanska sounds interesting. I wonder how it would do in Seattle. I have
hybrid plum-apricot (Pluot) trees in two different locations in town. These
trees are the first to bloom in my collection. In one location I always get
a few fruits. In the other location I never get fruit. If they bloomed a
little later I think these plum-apricot trees would do better. If you have
experience with Hanska, does it bllom earlier or later relative to plums?

Also I'm looking for someone with some Hanska scionwood. I checked the
ARS-GRIN government collection, and Hanska is not listed.

Laura:
The Professor Hansen-developed american-hybrid plum variety "Hanska" is I
hear supposed to taste
somewhat like an Apricot. Can anyone who has grown "Hanska" confirm that?

"Hanska" is supposed to be one of the heavier bearing american-hybrid plum
varieties, according to
some growers I have talked with. "Hanska" is not in my collection.
