About scion length, I would like to hear opinions what length is best.

I have grafted with scions from an inch long and the size of a wooden match - a terminal bud on a twig - to some pretty chunky stuff. It all depends on what is available. It's nice to have a couple of buds on the scion and pencil size is easy to handle.

I've grafted many times with short little scions with one bud when
scions of a variety are in short supply, Lately I got 11 trees out of
one 12 inch scion, It's better to have two buds on the scion in case one
breaks off. I try to make my cut (both scion and rootstock) so I slice
through a bud where cambium tissue is thick. I think this increases my
takes. Lee Elliott, Apple Hill Orchard, Winchester, Illinois
