Yes, summer pruning can be more an art than a science, but the key is to do big prunings gradually.
Also, removing large branches is stressful; so is pruning a little too late in the growing season, and so is pushing the hardiness zone of cultivars. And then the poor tree got toasted by a late frost ?!
