Here is a little page on refrigerator storage from Minnesota Ext. service. http://www.extension.umn.edu/extensionnews/2000/OldRefrigeratorIsGoodWinterStorage.html
When I visited with the fellow who operates one of the two commercial orchards in the county late last fall, he told me he had some ArkBlack apples in his cooler, from the previous year, that were still good, though somewhat shriveled, because his wife wouldn't keep the towels moistened(why he didn't do it, I can't tell you).
Thanks for your links/ thoughts on insulation.
Can you say more about this fellows storage...i.e. amount of apples, in what containers, lots of towels? hung up on a clothes line or on the boxes? too cold for mold on the towels? thanks, Del
