Here in Norfolk/Virginia Beach Feijoa seem to be hardy into single digits in a protected location. Beautiful plants with their silvery foliage and amazing flowers. They do fruit here - although we can't get a good answer on whether more than one variety is needed. At least one plant we know is fruiting with no other variety near. Anyone know more about this?
Our take on hardiness zones is that they are extremely generalized and most gardeners develop an awareness that their property may have micro-climates that span a full zone above or below their mapped zone location, from a wind protected sunny southern exposure (where our citrus, loquats and feijoa flourish) to windy, icy open areas or low cold-collecting areas that will freeze "hardy" plant varieties back each spring.
