If you are serious, I would bag the apples.
Use a small brown bag you can get at the market, no need to pay for the special ones for a few apples like you have.
If the rain destroys them, replace.
To redden up take off a few days before you pick.

Hi Ya'll, I think I remember some talk in the past about bagging
apples for their protection. I have some new types that are only two
years old and grafted on old trees which have produced a few apples and
would sure like to taste at least one of each.
My problem is the birds which are pecking and ruining many of them. I
had one clump of three Bramleys Seedlings and one fell yesterday, so my
chances of ripening the other two are slim. I have from ten to twenty of
some other varieties, so may get to taste a couple if I can foil the
birds. Have also considered a fony owl?

Would appreciate any suggestions from some of you more experienced folks.

Thanks, Jack Wigal
