I have grafted sweet cherry (P. avium) to the local wild
cherry (I do not have any verification that it is P.
serotina). It takes reasonably well. I have a slight concern
that the graft union may be brittle, but growth seems vigorous.
This year I grafted it using whip & tongue on Feb 15th. Had
about 50% take.

I don't have long term experience with this. I plan to graft
weeping cherry (P. serrulata?) onto the the sweet cherry.

Has anyone had any success using prunus serotina ("wild black cheery")
as a rootstock? It's NOT a dwarfing rootstock but I have several wild black
cherry trees along the edge of my property and I might as well put them to
good use. Thanks.
