There's an old Chinese Chestnut tree on campus that sets nuts only
rarely, but is big and healthy here in the midst of blight country (high
elevation western NC). There are also a number of stump sprouts of American
Chestnuts not too far away. I'm considering making an attempt to chip bud
some of the American wood onto branches of the Chinese tree this summer. If
the buds take & grow & eventually flower, I would have some native branches
growing on the Chinese tree. Any nuts that came from these branches would
be F1 hybrids of this Chinese and local Americans (the project is part of
The American Chestnut Foundation's Mother Tree project).
If the project feasible? Is chip budding a practical way to do this
grafting? I've read that it works better on nut trees than regular dormant
grafting. Any tricks or techniques I need to know beyond what is usually
written about chip budding? In other words, any advice appreciated.

thanks,

gene
