Del,
Some folks at the University of Arkansas - Fayetteville, Department of
Horticulture are also working on primocane fruiting blackberries. The have
developed a number of cultivars. I also pulled some things off the web that
mention primocane fruiting blackberries.

"Evaluation of single and double cropping systems of primocane-fruiting
blackberry selections - Chrislyn A. Drake and John R. Clark
Primocane-fruiting blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus Watson) selections have
recently been developed by the University of Arkansas, but proper
field-management practices have not yet been determined. One unknown aspect
of management is the difference between double cropping (producing a crop
on both the floricanes and primocanes) and single cropping (producing a
crop on only the primocanes). Many researchers have observed that
competition exists between flori- and primocanes of floricane-fruiting red
raspberries (R. ideas L.) and trailing blackberries. The objective of this
study was to determine the effect of floricane cropping on primocane
performance. Two plantings, one in Fayetteville, Ark. and one in
Clarksville, Ark., were used, and selections APF-8 and APF-12 were included
as genotypes. The two treatments included removal of floricanes from
plants in the primocane-fruiting only group in early spring before the
floricanes broke dormancy, and a non-removal control. Data collected
included date first primocanes reached 1 m (primocane emergence), number of
primocanes, yield of primocanes and floricanes, average berry weight of
primocanes
and floricanes, and total berry number for primocanes. Results showed that
the impact of cane management on most variables was not significant, except
for primocane emergence, which was delayed by non-removal of floricanes with
one of the genotypes. Results were consistent at both locations. Additional
findings of the study will be discussed."

"Make plans to come to the North American Berry Conference, February 3-6,
2002! The conference this year will be held in conjunction with the
Southeast Strawberry Expo at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham, NC.
Sponsoring organizations of the conference are the North American Bramble
Growers Association, North American Strawberry Growers Association, the
North Carolina Strawberry Association, and The International Ribes
Association. We expect there to be a large crowd from all over and an
extensive trade show for this conference.

Tuesday's program opens with a general session spotlighting successful
growers, followed by concurrent breakout sessions. Bramble sessions, held
throughout the day, will include topics such as primocane fruiting
blackberries, greenhouse raspberry production, and bramble breeding
programs. A number of other sessions, such as alternative markets and
value-added
processing will appeal to growers of all small fruits."

I was talking to a berry researcher for a moment this weekend. He mentioned
hearing of some new (10 year) research somewhere in the eastern states with
blackberries that bear on 'bull' canes, much like fall bearing raspberies.
Are first year blackberries also called primocanes like raspberries? He
mentioned a name - Henry or Harvey Schwartz of Maryland, as a possible
resource for this.
Does any of this ring a bell? If true , it is just possible I could grow
fall bearing blackberries here. Thankyou for any help, Del Stubbs Z2/3
