I have more than 2 acres of ribes and plenty of deer, never had any damage that I noticed. Wild turkeys sure like the gooseberries, and they also scratch away the leaves I use as mulch from the rows of currants. The deer have been a royal pain in the strawberry rows in late fall and early spring - they eat the plants right down to the crowns.
