Gordon,

I asked our California tech rep. to comment on trials on Walnut Husk Fly.
Here is what has been successful in "dry" California. Rainy areas would
require extra spray(s) to maintain the coating.

Make the first application as soon as the first fly appears in the traps or
as close to emergence as possible. Use 50 lbs per acre in enough fluid to
get good coverage. Plan to make a second application at 50 lbs per acre
within 7 days regardless of trap counts to maintain the coating. Maintain
Surround coating on a 14 to 21 day schedule as long as trap counts remain
low. Increase application frequency and consider alternative control
methods if high trap counts persist within 7 days after each application.
Three to five applications are to be expected for good suppression.

Applications on walnuts are labeled, and specifically, we plan to label
for suppression of walnut husk fly for next year as the trials are very
positive.

I wonder how it would work on the Walnut Husk Fly.

Doreen
I've used it on apples, plums and peaches this season and it did a
pretty
good job on plum curculio which has been a problem here ever since I
started
growing fruit. It takes a few sprayings before a coating really builds up
and
it seems to roll off smooth fruits like plums but if you touch the fruit
after it dries there is something there eventhough it's not really visible.
I
was impressed on how it did not clog the sprayer. It was also nice not to
have to use a mask when spraying and to let the kids play in the orchard.
Ofcourse the jury is still out on the apple maggot. We'll see.
