Evans has done quite well grafted onto mahaleb as Bailey Nurseries
does, you need only bury the graft union so that the Evans roots if
you prefer a self- rooted tree.
I wouldn't even use Evans seedlings as rootstocks as according to Dr
Evans the hardiness factor isn't passed along via seed.

He suspects that the original Evans came originally from Minnesota by
the way, from the same breeding program that produced Meteor and
Mesabi.
