We live in pocket gopher country (they're the ones who love roots and
make
wheel-borrow size piles of dirt) I happily tolerate them everywhere but the
hay field and the garden/orchard area. I figure they, in the long scheme of
things are very important creatures. They turn huge volumes of soil into the
most beautiful piles of friable material ready for tree seeds (that can't
compete otherwise with grass). These are where I plant things to leave wild,
like oaks .
Any way, one was in our 150' of asparagas and headed for my
ready-to-transplant apples. I was hot on its heels, but it fooled my
skilled-scentless trap setting 5 times in 2 days. This had to be the big 'ol
grandaddy who got our parsnips last year. I found a trick....lay the tile
spade horizontally in the trench to create a dark tunnel 2' past the trap.
It worked.
