Vic, I can't tell that it 'upsets' the tree at all, but it may be that it's
stimulating it to produce more and more suckers. These are springing up,
not right up next to the trunk, but anywhere from 3 to 6 feet or more away
from the main trunk. I guess, left to its own devices, it would form a
thicket, like P.americana.
