I know you didn't ask me, Joe, but I think the biggest error home gardeners
make
after buying a fruit tree is 'no aftercare'. Despite telling them how to
plant
and how to fertilize and that they must stake (M9 and M26) and how to train,
the
vast majority of people just stick the tree in the ground, some put a stake
in and
the rest just 'trust in god'.

The second biggest error is wrong choice of cultivar ..i.e. (a) varieties very
susceptible to scab planted in south coastal BC. (b) varieties that do well in
eastern WA (hot, dry) planted in south coastal (rainy) BC. (c) triploids
with no
pollenizer (d) tip bearers for espaliering.

Ed, what "basics" do you see novice fruit
: growers most often violating? I offer poor choice of
: species/cultivar/rootstock, planting in shady sites, and no after-care
: as the boo-boos I see most often.
