Dear Colleague,

This is to alert you to the latest news on the Acotanc-2001 Conference to
be held in Perth, Western Australia, next Easter (April 13-20). Apologies
for any cross-postings.

Officially the Ninth Australasian Conference on Tree and Nut Crops,
Acotanc-2001 is the premier tree event of the Southern Hemisphere. The 2001
staging, "Tree Crops: Essential for the Earth", is being held in a
beautiful part of the world, allowing you to combine useful contacts and
information gathering with a trip to an outstanding, safe, and good-value
tourist area.

A comprehensive website has been built and tested, with pages describing
all aspects of the Conference, and allowing on-line pre-registration.
These pages are accessed from the Acotanc-2001 Home Page, at
http://www.aoi.com.au/acotanc/Acotanc2001.htm.

We urge you to go through the website pages and, when you are ready, to
make the decision to take part in the Conference here in Western Australia
in 2001. This really looks to be an outstanding event in a very interesting
part of the world, making the Conference a very good reason for a visit to
Perth.

A Newsletter with the latest information on Acotanc-2001 has been
circulated to those who enquired earlier. This newsletter is available on
the website, or a copy will be gladly e-mailed to you on request. Just send
a blank e-mail with the subject "Acotanc Inform" to us at:
acotanc@AOI.com.au.

Some brief extracts from the Newsletter are shown below. The Conference is
now "Open For Business", and your enquiries will receive our careful
attention. Do think about this rare opportunity - the last time this event
was held in Western Australia was 18 years ago, in 1982.

Best regards, hoping to meet up with you in Perth next Easter -

David Noel, Acotanc-2001 Conference Coordinator

ACOTANC-2001: MAJOR TREE CROPS CONFERENCE SHAPING UP WELL

Progress with Acotanc-2001, the Ninth Australasian Conference on Tree and
Nut Crops, has been pleasing, and registrations are already coming in.

The conference will have as its central thread the superiority of
tree-based crops in environmental as well as economic matters.

The first three days of the Conference will be devoted to concurrent
streams of half-day 'Mini-Acs', specialist mini-conferences on topics such
as macadamias, figs, olives, tree propagation, Australian medicinal plants,
tree crops for saline and arid lands, cactus fruits, quandongs, exotic
fruits, and bush tucker plants.

Interest in Acotanc-2001 from overseas speakers and participants has been
excellent.

The Conference will also be breaking new ground in its extensive use of the
Internet. A comprehensive website has been built, at
www.AOI.com.au/acotanc. We encourage people to look round the site and
then, when they are ready, to use the on-line pre-enrolment form to lock in
their priority number for some high-demand events.

All the spoken papers and poster papers will be published on the Internet
after the Conference. The first Acotanc was held in Perth, in 1982, and
this was a watershed in local attitudes on the economic value of tree crops
as a major area of land use.

We expect Acotanc-2001 to be a similar watershed in appreciating the value
of tree crops in achieving economic growth hand-in-hand with
environmentally beneficial approaches.
