Chris
As school opens for 2013-2014 year we are reminded that shots and vaccines for both people and horses must be reviewed annually.
Many diseases thought wiped out in the US are reappearing because preventive vaccines are no longer being routinely given.
Measles is back with 3 times the cases this month as all of last year due to a lack of immunization in one community. Polio is non-existent
in the US but still kills many overseas, and is totally preventable by vaccine. The same applies to many diseases thought extinct.
Emergency service personnel should be current with their shots, including hepatitis, TB, pneumonia and use protective measures against
blood borne diseases or where physical contact with a victim is required.
Your horse should have shots for rabies, West Nile, Lyme and those diseases your vet recommends. Make sure if you administer
the shots yourself, where lawful, that you use a new disposable syringe for each shot. There is no sense cross contaminating vaccine
supplies or transferring blood among your horses. In those areas where your vet has to administer the shots have your entire barn
done at one time. This spreads out the costs of the barn call and also facilitates all the stock having the immunizations. It may require
two visits to complete the entire list or where multiple doses are required. If multiple doses are required the entire series must be given
for the immunization to work. This is also a good time to get a Coggins or ELISA test and have teeth checked.
