It is more than key words that should be on the training report if outside
agencies are going to see it as proof of training. It should include:
Day, date, time start, finish, weather, location, attendance (ICS sign in
form)
Mission TITLE: "Training for clue detection"
WHO the trainer was: name, contact, credentials
OIC from your organization or host organization
A Lesson Plan or outline of what was taught, including references to
published works
Handouts - 1 of each, especially if Power Point was used
ICS Forms for the mission: Plan, Comm Plan, Safety Plan, Exercise Plan as
needed
Incident reports: injuries (no matter how minor), lost or damaged equipment,
supplies used
And avoid jargon as much as possible. For location use the official name of
the area (the XYZ state park, camp site 17), not GPS coordinates.
Where an outside or sponsoring agency verifies training (and possibly
subsidizes it) having detailed records is important. While SAR, and MSAR in
particular, are not as paper hungry as other agencies I am dealing with ISO
over fire company training credit because the training officer just put down
"drill" on the training reports. This means no credit for 150 hours of
training in the community or 24 hours at the county training center. It
increases the cost of fire insurance for the township residents, something
Colorado residents will feel next year.

So I am thinking about developing a training log book for MSAR. One thing
many SAR log books have is a controlled vocabulary of activity type. I
request your assistance developing a controlled vocabulary for MSAR
activities.
Here is one controlled vocabulary from a dog training log that I use.
Unit
SAR
Assist
K-9
Non K-9
Training
Search
PR
Meeting
Hug-A-Tree
Area
Trailing
Evidence
Cadaver
Disaster
Obedience
Agility
Water
Paperwork
Other
How do you characterize your SAR horse training activities? What words do
you use when you talk about your activities with SAR team mates?
Thanks,
Una Smith
