Mules are more tolerable to heat than horses. That is why they are used to give carriage rides in GA. They are part dessert animal and can tolerate the heat indexes better then a horse most of the time. If you have mules as part of your SAR team, consider using them in hot humid searches. Just saying... Alice Ault TrotSAR’s SOP is; when the temperature or heat Index is expected to reach 98 degrees or higher, training activities will be cancelled. When temperatures are over 90 degrees, a 10 minute hydration break for self and mount must be taken hourly. When temperatures or heat index is over 98 degrees we generally respond to searches at night and deploy either in the dark or at first light, which dependent on the needs and planning of the AHJ or RA. We are in a high humidity region so the heat index plays a big role on searcher/horse safety protocol.

I am part of the North GA MSAR team and one of the things that has come up in the last month is when to make the call not to train/not to activate due to heat/humidity. Would anyone be willing to share what criteria have you used for your team?
