The National Fire Protection Association has adopted a
revised standard, NFPA 150, which covers installed fire detection and fixed fire suppression in commercial animal housing facilities. Those facilities housing any animals and having more than
one level, and or having a square footage as determined by the adopting authority (used to be 20,000 square feet) must
comply with either the local building codes or NFPA 150, whichever is stricter. In the horse world if you rent a stall, even for barter, you
would be covered by this standard. Your local jurisdiction may not require farm buildings to meet any code or even require
building permits. In that case, NFPA 150 is an industry accepted consensus standard and usually considered best practice in
civil litigation. Irv Lichtenstein SE PA SAR |
