They cannot be buried due to leaching into the water table and many plants that do render no charge for pick up and service. Burning is illegal in most areas of the East due to air quality concerns as well as health issues. It can cost over $400 to dispose of a healthy horse and watching your mount being dragged into a Dumpster is not fun. This is an event that has to be planned for, either by the boarding barn or the owner as fits the case. In most cases where the authorities order the horse down they will be able to suggest disposal arrangements or may be required to retain evidence from the carcass. Pennsylvania treats manure as hazardous waste and requires that the barn do the same paperwork as other generators, the haulers be licensed, and processors track where it came from and where it went. Irv Lichtenstein --->> Thanks Irv for that information, adding fees and PENALTIES from state to state will vary. And YES, seeing any horse being destroyed, abused etc is not something to take pleasure in. Seeing too many buried is a matter of grave concern. And that is not meant to be a pun it just raises the eyebrow when another backhoe shows up and the what ifs of
what are the rest of the health concerns.
Cleaning up backyarders pet cemetary ridden with the potential for TB is totally not my idea of fun.
Emotions aside.
Karen
