Message-ID: <13472B85D6944177B65ABCB9156CD589@useraf2125ae48> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi all, On Sunday night half the horse people in WA [AUST] received at least one e-mail,3 for me regarding a an outbreak of strangles ,resulting in 6 dead horses and 30 confirmed cases in our northern suburbs. This supposedly came from the Equestrian Federation of WA. I cannot say I was suspicious at that stage but I did wonder about 6 dead..must Hve been real old or foals. A few friends and SAR colleagues rang me etc to see if I could find out what was going on....I dont work so obviously have the time!!! The paper also had a 1/4 page article on monday morning. I contacted the Agricultural Dept ,strangles is not a notifiable disease ,but they knew nothing about it and were investigating. By 1100 they got back to me and said there was no outbreak of strangles.A couple of recent horse deaths in Wanneroo were not related to strangles.EFA did not release a warning etc. So it was a load of c--p.Our local feed store and vet sold out of strangles vaccine on Monday,so people did take the matter very seriously. By Monday night the matter was clarified for everyone...who has the internet. The question is who and why, was it just some moron having a bit of a joke ,or was it a case of chinese whispers, like the old army joke message to HQ send reinforcement. We are going to advance. message received as send 50c. we are going to a dance cheers Linda L -------------------------------------->>>> Linda:
Relevant if you travel, house or own a horse!
If you go here compare notes... I suppose a guy could google the word "strangles" and to get more of the picture!
Something every new horse owner should know before buying.
I was told by a certified vet once that once a horse had the dreaded disease it was immune, but that depended on what form....learned that lesson years later! Just how do you know if one had it? And which form? Be my questions back to him. I hoax you not!
Here again, knowledge is power...!
(Not relevant, but gotta say In reference to your old army joke, reminds me of the story of the seaman telling the admiral, you've got to set your course heading to the right 10 degrees. The admiral kept saying no, you move or I will blast you out of the water...long story short...
Dont argue with the guy in the lighthouse Rear Admiral, he just might save your six! (Go Navy!) Love it! Thanks, your qip made my day!

To those asking about the skinny chestnut.. call the number contact NetPosse.com. Just a grump here.. but going back a bit... funny how the posts on where the draft horses in the overturned semi made it here to MSAR and odd how one horses welfare suddenly gets a chafe in the rear when it all goes hand in hand and just my humble opinion on it all going hand in hand, glad to see others agree. Just a refresher note that load of horses in the over turned semi in that old old post those horses were draft horses heading to slaughter. Rescuers on the scene there were wanting people to adopt them and help...now I am guessing that is not MSAR or SAR or even R? The LE on the recent immacieated horse in the NetPosse post apparently were looking for those with information. Seems to me MSAR, SAR, R - its all about WELFARE and WELBEING and WATCHFULNESS no less
INFORMATION.. While some of the original post may not have been relavant... I think that the relavancy will depend on what facite of MSAR, VMSAR, VSAR, AND R or LE etc you personally do here so therefore opinions of how it fits in this forum even with the moderator will vary. With some its with animals, with others its people. Food for thought.

8-18-10 and Georgia Paso -
To those SEARCHING for that black gelding in the south, dumb question...was the owners cell phone attached when the horse got loose? Hoping the horse is still attached to the saddle, but after all that time, its an ever so cautious wish... the horse may be into more trouble because of the saddle if it was at large so long and in woodland.. . I would suspect if the horse is still out there and alive, its possibly injured and in rough shape because of the saddle on it when it got spooked and loose. Just a little weight loss on that horse and the saddle could go easily overturned in a roll and get the horse more hung up and more panicked. Also, while this horse was said to prefer women, is this saying men should keep out of any search?? Men, approach with said animal with more caution.
Here is again, a situation that could happen to anyone INCLUDING MSAR, VMSAR or just plain riding. There goes your gear, your horse and it only takes a breif second of inattention.

RE: Irv and Charities
Irv, you make good points! I understand what your saying there about the charities... we are all in this together.. some of us are out of own pocket, some are fed by government funds and some by the love of and some I dont know how... ...! I myself wonder about sporthorses and the gambling.. Question, are not you a nonprofit org? Refresh my memory..Whats that number AGAIN? 501 or 503c non profit? Is there a difference? Correct me if I am wrong! Im not too knowledgeable on those tax statuses and my numbers may be wrong.
Sad irony, when you go Good Sam, often times there is always gonna be someone that does not like it. Its that love thy neighbor, hate the sin thing. Not MSAR, but can be part of the flack. Hang in there buddy! Another question.. and where does one get the grants for VMSAR or MSAR?

RE: not of this post, but now that you mention it...
Laurie Hanahan said:
" Rescuers truly care about the animals that they invest their heart, money and efforts
into and won't sell you an animal just to make a buck - like "dealers" do. Never met a reputable horse "dealer" yet." Laurie - As far as horse dealers... Consinment barns do not know the horses or where the tack that they sell really came from since the majority work like car dealers..more trading on paper than a good sale with full disclosure and rare do they have an animal for any good length of time to give a real honest opinion. You will never get a "reputable" background on the horse in a sell barn that runs them through auction style and Lord only knows where the tack comes from when its at an auction barn and its a good chance both horse and gear can be stolen. Most do not care where as long as they get their commission and will not even ask or check and in this downed ecomony, how many are really being honest in saying they do so?? How many take the time to really care? How many even check if the horses has a coggins paper? Used to be the Dealers were slaughter house clearing barns and gave the
owners a place to rid themselves of horses they had not fit for society in their opinioons. And others would go hoping for a good deal hoping they could rehab only many times themselves returning the same animal to the sell arena.
Also, I whole heartedly beleive you are wrong about Irv and in what you said about not caring for animals. Your comment when you said....(the I being you...)
"I have NEVER made a profit on a single dog, and retired due to the idiotic statements I hear from ignorant people such as Irv's below. Obviously you have never cared enough to rescue an animal in need."
Laurie, the man is very caring. Go back to the first sentence I qouted of you... where you say "Rescuers truly care about the animals that they invest their heart, money and efforts into and won't sell you an animal just to make a buck...." You do realize that
Irv invests a lot of time, energy and heart into the horse he rides for MSAR as well as is very caring for those people or otherwise he helps in any rescue. He has a lot of backbone to say what he does.
Now, as bad as this sounds the truth is what is happening in todays society is that the animal welfare charities are also perpetuating bad behavior and not curing it. Neutering any animal is no cure for bad ownership. These charities really have given the bad owners places to dump. Example: Race horse rescue barns only perpetuate an already flooded market and a lot of busted down horses. Adding to that the degredation that also comes to the society with the gambling, booze, drugs, prostitutes, homeless, lost and other foolishness that gets some people into situation where they need to be rescued themselves from..... What is it though with run them when they are too young and really not fit, then throw them away to another stable if they cant win.. then pawn it off like the next guy is a hero.?? Hero, my six. I also do not call that a rescue. Now that to me is about
as legal of stupidity as you can get and downright cruel. Do you see what is happening there? Maybe I did not say this right, but I tried.
And like I also said, people that deserve help like a hand up during a hard time get slapped in the face and a chaffed behind when their animals get taken away and that is pathetic. They are made like bad guys when situations like losing a job or health are the culprits and they are not BAD OWNERS since they treated them well in good times. Then the BAD owners walk away laughing at the crimes they get away with because the animal charities really do give them an out. Instead of addressing the problems at the right level, the charities are now a dump zone. That is why they too are full and getting no where. When they take an animal from a good home that simply needs a hand up to keep them, that is nothing but stealing an animal from someone that deserves to be treated better. It is too bad that the humane societies do not have some of their own priorities
straight. And just like this forum... perhaps if more people here took also the approach of prevention.. well... might put some out of a job, but it would save livs lives... so what it going to be?
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but it is another situation of rescues.

RE: posted by Emily - 8/18/10
you said and I qoute with the "I" being you...
"I seldom post on this site but I do read the posts. I agree that this is a site for MSAR, not horse rescue. You have posted two do The second is a lost horse, which those in the area know to keep an eye out for.
I am not impressed with your use of the phrases, "now do you guys get the point,' "get the picture," "you fail to read." I heard what you said. I believe that your efforts for emaciated horse rescue would find support in other sites that have the resources and structure to do so. " Emily,I should not even respond to this, but since you mentioned it... those phrases/questions were not directed to you and just to the 2 people involved in the original in the post and their replies. They know who they are. Sorry if you took it wrong.

RE: Emaciated horses in Illinois.....
Una, Sorry the "skinny" picture in the email was offensive, my apologizes, however that was their post to me...,. Guess its a good thing you could not post that emmaciated horses picture.. I question at 500 lbs for a close to 15 hand horse if that post was not a hoax, but then I had to consider the source. Just those details alone were enough to make my skin crawl. I would venture to say the weight posted in numbers was a guess, the mare in the photo..it did looked every bit of that guess and the horse was still standing.. Amazing as most horses that bad are hardly able to stand yet alone for a picture. Not knowing her breed...its hard to immagine what near15 hands looks like at 500 lbs. LE was looking for information on the people on the crime and who turned her lose. Dont think NetPosse is in the business of sending out hoaxes.
Also, search and rescue means many things to many people. Some here combine rescue efforts for animals as well as people and rescue tactics for both are similiar. And yes, I respect too your diplomacy. Just remember Katrina. Thanks.
And again, sorry about the combined post, but it was going to get crazier had I addressed these in any other way. This forum format gets a tad narly! But its what we have and you do great work! Is there any chance of a change there to make it not so difficult to read? Just asking!
