Because of the humidity in the Midwest, I adopted a simple way to offer electrolytes to encourage my horses to drink. A boarding barn where we were put 1 tsp. of a flavored, powdered electrolyte mix in with a daily grain feeding even if it is only a handful. It could be offfered this way before and after a long ride on a sultry day if needed. Some horses will not drink water that is flavored and the electrolyte gels are expensive unless you are training at a rigorous sport like endurance. I know most horses get all they need from a plain salt block if they are not working, but I like to offer basic minerals to horses who only get pasture this time of year. I believe humans and horses do need to replace electrolytes and minerals to recover well from exertion; especially if the search is over several days. If it helps avoid colic or tying up and encourages sweating and rehydration, it is worth the small investment. --- On Sat, 4/17/10, T'mi Finkle <tfinkle@erols.com> wrote:
