If you are aware that a member cannot fulfill certain duties you should not
expose the member, the organization, the mission, or the public to those
risks. Knowing a member has heart problems that result in incapacity on the
job, regardless of what his doctor says (preferably in writing) and sending
him out is negligence bordering on criminality is some jurisdictions. I am
sure the sheriff would hold this person for desk duty not field duty.

My doctor says I can do anything on the fire ground, including interior
firefighting with an air pack, drive rigs to fires under emergency
conditions, etc. He says lifting 80 pounds of tack over my head is good for
me (unless I drop it on somebody). I don't drive fire trucks with 6 fellow
volunteers aboard anymore, except the utility and boat trailer, I don't ride
alone anymore, no matter how tempting the weather or the moonlight on the
trail, and I use USRider to change flat tires. My condition takes a long
time to become life threatening but it will take 3 or 4 to haul me out of a
building in a fire and I consider that risk unacceptable.

we have in our mounted sheriff posse in Arizona a workman's comp insurance,
but I know that one person that perform search and rescue mission on a
regular bases is over 75 and has heart problem, he passed out few times in
the past when he was on the trail , do you think the insurance company will
give us hard time if they'll find out about it? or maybe they will just ask
us to include this person in the active mission?

Thanks.
