The drug used on these ponies was compounded, not manufactured by a major house.  It was requested to be made by a pharmacy because the drug it was modeled on is not approved for use in the US and could not be imported with the horses.  The compound was formulated incorrectly according to the supplier and probably caused death. 

 

There has been on ongoing controversy as to whether using compounded and not necessarily approved drugs (and even herbal supplements are drugs) in place of materials supplied through the usual pharmacy suppliers and manufacturers is smart, or even should be legal.  In some cases home remedies may work, and may be cheaper or more effective than the stuff in the child proof bottle but they have not been tested or approved as efficacious.
