Hi Jim,
First off, your comments and mine are off list at the momment. if you want them posted to the list, go ahead and do so. I am fine with that if you just want to send this email in for the rest of the group to benefit. Otherwise it goes no further than here. So for the benefit of others, I suggest just to send this email in its entirety to the list! And others can give their comments and feedback.
Now, if I was lost, most of all, use common sense if lost if still able to do so.I would pretty much do the same as you.. It would depend on situation and weather and conditions what I would try to do first as for water, food, shelter. Conserving energy would be a priority. Me, I would also try to find my barings...try to determine which way is north, south etc even if without a compass..that is if I was still in mind able to function. Try not to panic. If I had to travel, would try to back track as best as possible. Not always easy to do in the woods or if I was a surviver of a plane crash or someone knocked silly!
Now if I was a panicky person, I might wander in desperate measures trying to find my way. Tracking me may be confusing as my tracks might cross if I were to go in circles looking for a way to travel. If I were exhausted, my steps would be short and heavy, might drag in the dirt. The more exhausted, the more I might try to lose my load to lighten up my travel, lose things, purse, wallet, hats, just to name a few! If I was hanidacapped, one leg might be footprinting heavier than the other or dragging or possibly using a crutch of somesort.. Would lose stuff as I became disorientated, or cold or too hot and become confused and perhaps roam in panic
If I was abducted, my heels might be drugged in the dirt or the perp may have carried me. He may have violated me, torn my clothes, drawn blood. I may leave tears of clothes in the brush if I was carried through the woods, or blood where my hands maybe have tried to grab branches in measures to escape, climb or reach. If I was an MSAR, I would be looking for signs in the brush at those heights and on the ground tracking. If I was on a recovery, I would be paying attention to nature, sites, smells, sounds, bugs just as my horse would. I would look for signs where the subjects hands may have been able to grab onto something and multiple tracks. Signs of shallow primitive makeshift graves.
If I was a toddler or young child, I probably would wander aimlessly, my tracks would be all over in a small area in circles or in panic stretches running. I may fall down from exhausting, lose my backpack or teddy bear or doll I might stomp my feet in panic leaving numerous prints in one spot. If I was an MSAR, I would be looking for tight small footprints, items the child may have worn or carried, things hand height where he or she may grab or shoulder heigh of an adult if carried.
If this was a recovery, say by an abduction, I would search for signs of a shallow grave, visible bones clothing anything that could be a clue. I would be looking for signs form animals digging or rutting, buzzards if they had habitat in that location. Hope my horse would indicate scent.
As a volunteer MSAR heading to a search, I would head to the command post, I would check in with the commanding officer first thing and ask them what next, where can they use me. They in turn would ask my skills in brief, check me in and hustle me to where needed after checking in and go from there! If I was already in an MSAR group, contact the leader or someone that can point the way to where I need to be!
Before heading anywhere, notify my significants of where heading and plan of return and pray to God nothing goes wrong! Never assume when someone is late or that they are ok and just did not call in. Keep vigil. Keep track. Keep in touch.
If you are having trouble posting to the list, let me know and I will go ahead and put this email there! Thanks for writing.

Stay put! Work on surviving (shelter-water-food), conserving energy and try to be seen from the air. Wait...we will come get you. Jim

Ok, guys, we are about to lose a MSAR prospect....perhaps maybe we should have some discussion on what would someone do if they were lost! Rick says he is not learning anything and wants to drop off from the list... perhaps let's reverse this, we are no longer searchers here, we are lost....your input please!! Let's put ourselves in this hypothetical lost persons shoes and go on a venture....
Rick, if you are still with us, give the group a scenario of a place a person that could be lost...describe to the group a little about this person, his/her age, what they are wearing etc. (Una, if Rick is gone, perhaps you can start this conversation with your hypothetical person and the group can give feedback?) REMEMBER, this is hypothetically speaking!
Describe the event that took place that you got lost...ie: were you homeless, abducted, a child? Then the group can give ideas to find this person...
(Hey, if we have to light a fire under this group to get people involved..let's go on a mock internet search and see where this leads!)
