Today the LaSalle County (IL) Sheriff’s MSAR Posse successfully completed a two day search at Starved Rock State Park in the Northwest region of Illinois.  The park has 2,630 acres of timber and deep ravines.  While the developed parts of the park are heavily used by visitors, much of the area is Illinois wilderness and too dense for horses.  The subject was a 43 year old male who speaks only French and who suffered from mental illness.  He was found in relatively good condition and taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

After the first day of using a plane, a helicopter, dogs, river rescue teams, ground teams, and motorized vehicles, searchers were discouraged.  They felt that the evader might not be found given the many places to hide.  Reports of sightings were not verifiable although there were several.  At 6:00 AM on the second day, a park employee spotted the subject near the Illinois River.  By 8:30 the area was sealed off by ground searchers, boats, horses, and vehicles.  The searchers moved toward the river both containing the subject and putting pressure on him to move toward the river.  He finally entered the river where he was spotted by river rescue units on the water.  They convinced him to get into their boat.  The subject had fashioned a make-shift boat from dock material.

This search was complicated by the fact that the subject had a reversible jacket.  It was red on one side and a dark color on the other.  When searchers were first briefed, he was said to have on a red jacket.  On the second day he was described as having a dark colored jacket.

Missing Canadian man spotted, found near park

07/01/2008, 11:04 am

About 50 law enforcement officers and firefighters -- including Ottawa River Rescue and mounted La Salle County sheriff's deputies -- were engaged in a successful search operation Tuesday morning in rural southwest Ottawa.

A car belonging to a 43-year-old white Canadian man was found near a Route 71 bridge construction project. According to reports, people living in the Catlin Park area have spotted the missing man. His family has contacted local authorities, but the man is not believed to have any connection to the Ottawa area and was not a fugitive.

The man, who had a mental condition, was found before 9:30 a.m. For more information on this story as it develops, log on to www.mywebtimes.com.
