Troxel Helmet will have on the market in June 2008 an SEI approved
equestrian riding helmet in the style of a Western Riding Hat. You can
find photos of the product and additional information at the following web
address:
http://www.troxelhelmets.com/products/
Click on the Western menu bar above the Sierra Helmet photo or go to
the Choose a Helmet - Quick Find at the bottom of the page and click on
the menu where you will find the Western Hat Helmet listed. The product
consists of a premium wool felt cowboy hat fitting over an ultra-low
profile helmet. Troxel has the helmet priced at $119.95 and states it
will be sold through tack shops.
You may recall a survey I sent out in 2007 which made the rounds on the
internet. The response to the survey was overwhelming and in favor of
production of a riding helmet which met the SEI safety standards and
had the Western hat look. It is my hope this had an impact in bringing
this product to life.

I am hoping this WESTERN HELMET is worth its salt! I have voiced support of a hat with a brim, or helmet with a brim for many many years and it has been a long time coming.
Due to an injury suffered many many years ago, I am a rider that has what is called a military posture neck. The first 7 vertebrea from the back of the head down are nearly strung straight out like a string of pearls, but throught the wonders of my chiropractor, he has helped me restore the natural curve. If I
would suffer a fall from a horse and not have the brim for an added shock absorbing element and hit my head and neck flat while riding with a regular helmet, I shudder to think if I would be able to be doing any of the things that I now do today just in the fact that a regular cowboy hat has saved my bacon. And any improvements made made therein, are to be a true blessing.
My injury has caused relentless problems with TMJ, carpal tunnel, to slurring of speach, uncoordination of hands, headaches, backaches and the like. I live in daily pain, but made managable through my chiropractors excelent work, as he too has helped put control on that and given me a near normal life. Reretably I suffer from progressive degenerative arthritis which means things for me will progressively only get worse, but until then, I have a somewhat normal life.
If it was not for a smooth
gaited PASO horse, I could not ride, but I am so delighted too hear now that TROXEL has finally stepped up to the plate and put out a hat that could be MY future life saver!!
Perhaps your survey and maybe just by the odd chance Troxel took a listen here on MSAR as I know there has been some utterly lively conversation about the Western hat here! Thanks!
I regret the Troxel is a tad pricey, but so too is a good Stetson and I for one would be one that would love to try one out! The cost of no had is far worse!
Also, I am a strong advocate of any horsemen to find a good trainer to teach you how to take a fall. The very same will also help you protect your body in the events there of. Please do nto rely on any one peice of safety gear to "save" your life. They only act to help in the matter, but without knowing more on how to ride and to take the bumps that often
come, your riding careers or life could be greatly shortened. Learn to ride the fall!
Still riding after all these years!! And can still sit the great actions of a cutter or gaming horse. Just have to do it a tad different than I did in my younger days!

PS - also, my sincere thanks to those here who helped us get through our hay crisis. The hungry mob is fat and sassy thanks to you all!
And to Irv, get well quick!
